Facebook has a feature that lets users tag their friends and Facebookers in photos. The next question is, “what’s tagging?” Tagging is a term used when a Facebook user has identified a person in their uploaded photos. It also adds an active link to that person’s page. The person’s name will also be highlighted below the image. For example, if someone is interested in seeing more photos of a person, they can click on the photo and it will show other images linked by Facebook users. Anyone can tag a person even if they are not Facebook friends. The purpose of this function is to view more pictures of a person that others have posted. MySpace has also added this function recently.
MySpace Music has a music page called, MySpace Secret Shows. They actually put on shows that are, well, secret. The last ’secret’ show was Feb. 16th in New Orleans. The show featured hip hop artists, Lil Wayne and Mike Jones. Nearly 400 MySpacers attended the event, which was during the NBA All-Star weekend in New Orleans. To find out more about secret shows, the profile has to be added to one’s MySpace friends. MySpace Secret Shows are only advertised on MySpace and will post frequent updates. Facebook now has an application called iLike, where you can add music and videos to your profile page. You can also dedicate songs to your friends and see who’s going to certain concerts. It is also similar to MySpace Music in the way that you can become friends with music artists and get more information about them. Musicians who create a page can get details on their fans’ stats and upload their music and events. There are over six thousand Facebook users who have added this application. Pretty cool.
*Currently waiting for response from Facebook in regards to the application history.

I had the chance to chat with an upcoming artist named Epic over the weekend via MySpace e-mail by chance. He was currently online at the moment and I sent him a message, giving him background about my class assignment and he agreed to participate. Originally from Southern California, the rap/hip hop artist has been making music for five years but has been a solo artist for one year. Epic, whose real name is Justin Barnette, was given his stage name from his uncle. At the time, he went by another stage name when he recorded with his former group members. He let his uncle hear some of their material. His uncle thought Barnette stood out from the others and that his style was epic. “That word ‘Epic’ stuck in my head and I ended up making [it] my rap name.” said Epic. Epic has also been a MySpaceMusic member since September 2006. He also believes that MySpace Music has helped him gain exposure as an artist. “MySpace has helped me create a fan base and gives me a platform to showcase my talents. It also helps me keep in touch with fans contact promoters, magazines and such.” said Epic.
